Treatment
Not everyone needs medication — and when it's recommended, it's usually simple and well tolerated.
Many people with hepatitis B are simply monitored over time and never need medication. When treatment is recommended, it's usually a once-daily tablet that is very effective and easy to take long-term.
These medicines don't usually "cure" the infection, but they do something very valuable: they keep the virus suppressed, calm liver inflammation, and greatly reduce the risk of long-term complications. Many people take them for years with few or no side effects.
The decision to treat depends on your viral load, liver enzymes, the degree of any scarring, your age, and other personal factors. It's a conversation to have with your provider or a liver specialist — and a good question to bring to your next appointment is simply, "Do I need treatment now, or are we watching?"
